The Volcanic nature of Vulcano has long impressed visitors. In addition to this, the island is today also well known for its therapeutic mud baths and hot springs.
You might feel a thrill as you spot the white smoke rising from the steaming craters that tower over the island. For sure you will be hit by the characteristic sulphurous smell coming from the hot springs which infuse the air.
An interesting and pleasant day trip on Volcano might include climbing up to the “Great Crater”, swimming off the dark volcanic beaches, sailing around the wild coast or trekking up to the Vulcanello peninsula, relaxing in the therapeutic muddy waters and visiting the small villages of Gelso and Piano.
The “Laghetto dei Fanghi” is a natural pool of muddy water. The warm mud has long been considered an excellent treatment for rheumatic pains and skin diseases. The “Spiaggia Sabbia Nera” nearby is one of the few sandy beaches in the Aeolian Islands.
Not far from “Laghetto dei Fanghi” and “Spiaggia Sabbia Nera”, and quite impressive, is the “Valle dei Mostri” on the Vulcanello hill. It is a group of dark rocks eroded by the wind that have formed grotesque shapes hence the name “Valle dei Mostri” which means “Valley of the Monsters”.
